Live Brighter & Work Smarter
The way we use electricity at home has shifted completely over the last decade. A single household today might run two electric vehicles, a heat pump, an induction range, a home office, and a whole-home generator all on a panel that was installed when none of those things existed.
Phase 3 Electrical helps homeowners and businesses across Newport News and Hampton Roads close the gap between what their electrical system was built for and what it actually needs to do today. Our Class A Master Electrician plans every upgrade to current code, pulls every required permit, and makes sure the work is inspected and documented from start to finish.
Our upgrade and installation services cover everything your home or business needs to run safely at modern electrical loads. We upgrade panels from 100-amp to 200-amp or 400-amp service and install sub-panels for garages and additions. We replace dangerous Federal Pacific, Zinsco, and Stab-Lok panels and run dedicated 240-volt circuits for EV chargers and hot tubs.
Whole-home standby generators, automatic transfer switches, and whole-house Type 2 surge protection are all part of what we do. We also install recessed and landscape lighting, hang ceiling fans, and complete full or partial rewires for older properties still running knob-and-tube or aluminum branch wiring. We pull the permit, do the work right, and never close a job without a passing municipal inspection.
We quote before we start. What you hear is what you pay.
What determines where your project lands within those ranges comes down to a few key factors. Whether the panel needs to be relocated, the condition of the existing service mast and meter base, how much branch wiring needs to be brought up to current code, and whether Dominion Energy needs to schedule a disconnect and reconnect all affect the final number.
For most simple panel upgrades in Newport News and the surrounding Hampton Roads area, we complete the work in a single day. We coordinate the Dominion Energy disconnect, pull the city permit, finish the installation, and schedule the final municipal inspection. You receive a written itemized estimate after a free on-site walkthrough with no pressure to book on the spot. If your panel is a genuine fire risk, we will tell you that plainly and explain exactly why.
Watch for lights that dim when large appliances kick on, breakers that trip regularly, warm or discolored panel covers, or a burning smell near the box. Panels over 25 years old and Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or Stab-Lok brands should be evaluated immediately, even without obvious symptoms.
Most 100-amp to 200-amp upgrades take one full day. Power is off for roughly four to eight hours while we work. We coordinate the Dominion Energy disconnect in advance so the outage is scheduled and predictable. Larger upgrades or panel relocations may require two days.
It depends on your panel's amperage, available breaker slots, and existing loads. We run a full load calculation before recommending anything. Most 100-amp panels cannot support a 50-amp EV circuit without compromise, but every home is different, and we will give you an honest answer.
It is not overstated. Both brands have documented histories of breakers failing to trip during overloads, which allows wiring to overheat and start fires. Many Virginia insurers now require replacement as a condition of coverage. We treat these panels as a priority and can typically replace them within two weeks.
It depends on what you need to power. A 10 to 16 kilowatt unit covers lights, a refrigerator, and basic circuits. An 18 to 22-kilowatt unit handles central HVAC. Full home coverage typically requires 24 kilowatts or more. We assess your load and recommend the right size for your budget.
A whole-house surge protector is installed at your panel and blocks voltage spikes before they reach your appliances and electronics. Surges from lightning, utility events, and appliances cycling on and off cause cumulative damage over time. A Type 2 device costs far less than replacing a smart TV, HVAC control board, or refrigerator.
